Tonight's op-ed is from Duncan Wardle, former VP/Innovation & Creativity at Disney, who has since launched his own creative consulting company iD8. He writes that while sports betting is one of the "biggest opportunities for major league sports since the industry started streaming games online in the early aughts," there is a "bigger opportunity lurking around the corner -- one that has been massively accelerated thanks to COVID-19, and one that will help teams across all leagues create the ultimate fan experience."
Wardle: "The impact on fan experience (and revenue) from (augmented reality) is nearly infinite. What would a fan pay to 'sit' next to Babe Ruth for an inning and listen to him tell stories from his era? How great would it be if every child in the stadium could interact with the team mascot all at once? What if you could watch the instant replay of an amazing play right from your AR lens and then purchase a limited copy of that replay as a commemorative non-fungible token? Or a special sponsor-branded virtual souvenir available only to fans who attended that game? And for the sports betting crowd, how many more bets would they place if real-time scores and analytics popped up in their field of view during the game? This just scratches the surface of what will be possible with AR technology in the not-too-distant future."
