Source: No indication of Seahawks sale anytime soon

Seahawks Chair Jody Allen's low profile since taking over the team helps fuel speculation of a saleJoe Nicholson/USA TODAY Sports

The Seahawks are “not currently for sale” and that there is “no indication they will be anytime soon,” according to a source cited by Bob Condotta of the SEATTLE TIMES. This comes as some observers have noted that Seahawks Chair Jody Allen has been “overseeing the selling off of some other assets” in recent months. That Allen has “maintained an exceedingly low profile" since taking over the Seahawks helps "fuel speculation.” She has “given no interviews and only a few statements.” However, she was as “visible as she’s been during her time as team chair” during the draft April 28-30, "seen in the war room during the first round, with the team posting pictures of her on its website." Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and GM John Schneider also “mentioned Allen regularly” in their news conference following the trade of QB Russell Wilson and then "again during the draft" (SEATTLE TIMES, 5/25). In Tacoma, Gregg Bell notes it is "possible lawyers for Allen’s estate will soon review what to do" regarding ownership of both the Seahawks and Trail Blazers. However, a source stressed that there has been "no indications of a sale" (Tacoma NEWS TRIBUNE, 5/25).

POSITIONING FOR SALE: Sports reporter John Canzano wrote insiders expect the Trail Blazers to be “positioned for auction in the next 6-18 months.” The Seahawks could “follow shortly after," but sources said that Allen may be “wrangling to keep a piece” of the team. Allen’s interest in remaining an owner of the Seahawks is “unconfirmed.” However, an insider at Vulcan, Inc. this week said that he believed Allen was “slow-playing the potential sale of the NFL team -- leaving the Seahawks for last -- because she had interest in retaining an ownership stake.” Blazers Vice Chair Bert Kolde has been “put in charge” of the team's auction. A number of potential ownership groups have been “rumored to be interested in pursuing" the Blazers, and among the names that have been heard as "possible majority owners: Oracle Corporation co-founder Larry Ellison, philanthropist MacKenzie Scott and Laurene Powell-Jobs" (JOHNCANZANO.SUBSTACK.com, 5/24).

SBJ Spotlight: TikTok’s threat to traditional sports media

While tech companies are consumed with finding ways to compete with TikTok, almost no one in conventional media “spends any time talking about it,” said Recode senior correspondent Peter Kafka in an Spotlight interview with SBJ’s John Ourand. “To me, that’s just an obvious disconnect.” Kafka authored a recent column headlined, “It’s TikTok’s world. Can TV live in it?” He said the main response to TikTok’s growth from traditional media execs has been to “punt and hope it’s someone else’s problem a quarter from now or two years from now.” But Kafka said that ignores the trend of conventional broadcast audiences growing older while a billion younger consumers spend most of their media time watching short video after short video. “If you’re in the business of getting anyone under the age of 30 to look at what you’re putting on a screen, you have to think about the fact that you’re probably asking them to put down TikTok and watch your thing instead,” said Kafka. “That’s a very difficult ask. … [TikTok] is insanely addictive.”
