SBJ Atlas: PGA Championship brings sponsor dollars to Oklahoma City

By Michael Cupello

Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa wrapped up its record fifth PGA Championship yesterday, its most recent since ’07. The club, about an hour-and-a-half drive northeast of Oklahoma City’s center, has hosted eight major men’s golf championships in a market that hosts just one major U.S. sports team: the NBA's Thunder. The event gave Thunder sponsors exposure outside of the basketball sphere -- with Gatorade, Chase and Michelob all partnered with the PGA of America as well as the team. Gatorade and Michelob activated as official non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages served at the course, while Chase has been the official retail bank of the PGA of America since ’15. Their premier rewards card, Chase Sapphire Preferred, serves as the official credit card of the championship and the organization. To see how sponsors are activating within major sports markets around the country, head to SBJ Atlas.
