Newell enjoys spending time outdoors when she gets a break from her busy work scheduleBECKY NEWELL
The Solheim Cup is underway in Scotland, as the U.S. team looks to retain the cup against the Europeans. THE DAILY recently caught up with '21 Solheim Cup Tournament Dir BECKY NEWELL before she traveled across the pond to take in the event and assist the U.S. team. She said there will be a “great contingency of folks” from Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, which will host the ’21 event. Newell will have plenty of things keeping her busy this weekend, but she hopes to be able to do some exploring after the event concludes.
THE JOB: It’s definitely sunup to sundown, especially with the team. It’s pairings and making sure you've got golf carts, radios, all those kinds of things. But it’s a little more laid back. I will be making sure the team’s prepped, the uniforms and caddies are a go, we’ve got the walkie-talkies ready so captain JULI INKSTER can talk to our assistant captains and make sure they have everything they need inside the ropes to make them successful. On top of that, we’ll have Marathon Petroleum with us. They are our global partner, along with Ping and Rolex. We’re going to be working closely with our Inverness contingent as well as the marathon Petroleum folks, giving them a behind-the-scenes tour of what to expect, whether it’s television, hospitality, the whole expo area at the entrance. I may not be able to have a glass of scotch until Sunday at the end of the closing ceremonies, where we do a celebration kicking off '21. I will be able to see some golf, but work comes first. What I’m there to do is support and help manage not only the team, but all of our guests.
NORMAL WEEKEND: I don’t sit still very often. That’s the big thing about me. I enjoy cycling. I run, I do CrossFit. My husband and I are big cyclists. I grew up in Toledo. We moved away in '92, and it’s nice to see how the city over the past 30 years has evolved. There’s so many things to do, from the restaurants we’re always finding, a concert downtown in Promenade Park or taking in a Mud Hens game. We love going to the ballpark, and we’re big hockey fans, so the (ECHL Toledo Walleye) did really, really well. We don’t sit still very often. We’re always moving and we love to hike and backpack. But in Scotland, I won’t be able to ride my bike or work out.
TRAVEL SPOTS: We love when we get to go back to Colorado. We moved from Ft. Collins in '14, as I was running the Solheim Cup in '13. Downtown Ft. Collins on College Avenue was a place where we liked to go. We’re just big outdoor people, and we’re looking forward to a vacation there -- hopefully in October -- after Solheim’s over. But when home, our Sunday afternoons are spent grilling out and catching the LPGA. We’re going to try after the event (in Scotland) to take a look at some of the castles and so something fun before we leave.
