SBJ adds Silverman to cover hockey and soccer, shifts Smith to finance beat full time

By Ted Keith

The world of sports business never stops evolving, and the same is true for Sports Business Journal. We are pleased to announce a pair of moves among our reporters. First, Alex Silverman has joined us as a staff reporter, and will cover the worlds of hockey and soccer.

Silverman

Silverman returns to SBJ headquarters in Charlotte, where he was a staff writer for Sports Business Daily from 2013 to 2017. He subsequently covered the media industry at Cablefax and, most recently, served as a senior reporter covering sports business for Morning Consult. Silverman, a Long Island native who graduated from the Missouri School of Journalism in 2013, has also served as a corporate communications manager at Univision Communications Inc.

“I’m thrilled for the opportunity to cover hockey and soccer, two sports I am deeply passionate about, for the business’s preeminent news and information source. I look forward to delivering valuable news and insight to our audience, as well as telling the stories of the men and women who make sports such a fascinating field.”

Smith

There is also movement among our existing staffers. Chris Smith, who joined SBJ from Forbes in February 2020 and has spent two years expertly covering the Olympics, finance, and sports and entertainment, will shift his focus full time to covering sports finance. His coverage will focus on, among other areas, team sales, debt limits, ownership rules, corporate M&A and publicly traded sports companies.

Said Smith: “There’s never been more activity in sports finance, and I’m excited to be able to explore that space more fully and tell the stories of the people that drive that part of the industry.”

SBJ Spotlight: Warner Bros. Discovery

CNBC media reporter Alex Sherman joins SBJ’s John Ourand to discuss Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming strategy. The two talk about the company’s interest in sports rights, with Sherman noting that the company is in a cost-cutting mode, which is one reason why it has not been active in media rights negotiations over the past several months.
