Year in Review: Trading cards

The trading card industry was turned upside down in August when Fanatics secured rights with the MLB, MLB Players Association, NBA, National Basketball Players Association and NFL Players Association, replacing tenured brands Topps and Panini in the process. Each entity will receive equity in Fanatics as part of their respective partnerships. Fanatics’ MLBPA deal is more than 10 times larger than any partnership in the union’s history. A few weeks later, Fanatics’ new trading card venture received $350 million in Series A funding that values the firm at $10.4 billion.
