Goodell unaware of ouster rumor surrounding Commanders' Snyder

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he is "not aware ... at all" of the rumor circulating that some NFL owners are "counting votes" to remove Commanders Owner Dan Snyder from his position, according to Madison Williams of It is "quite possible that a move towards an owner's vote hasn't happened yet, but rather just talk." If a vote does occur, it "would require 24 out of 32 owners to vote that Snyder, who has been the owner since 1999, be removed from his position" (, 5/24). Several NFL team owners said that they "would support a significant suspension by the league" of Snyder "if allegations of sexual harassment and financial impropriety against him and the team are substantiated." The owners said that "no meaningful steps have been taken toward making a push to remove Snyder from ownership of his franchise." One owner said, "There's anger. But there's quite a difference between wishing he was gone and taking steps to force him out." That owner and others said that they "would support the league taking significant disciplinary action against Snyder if an investigation being conducted by attorney Mary Jo White corroborates the allegations." While not ruling out the possibility of ousting Snyder, multiple owners cited the "legal complications of such an attempt, expressing the belief that Snyder would go to great lengths to fight any such effort" (WASHINGTON POST, 5/25).

GROWING CONCERNS: ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said “after asking sources throughout the week I never got the sense that owners were going to formally vote" on Snyder and "whether to remove him.” Fowler: “Now I was told there is some frustration boiling, that there is some concern among that ownership group.” Fowler noted if Snyder is “indicted for any sort of financial impropriety, this could escalate in a hurry” (“SportsCenter,” ESPN, 5/24). WFAN’s Gregg Giannotti said he felt Goodell stating he “knew nothing" about Snyder being ousted was "a lie." WFAN’s Boomer Esiason said that issues around Snyder “got complicated” after the Commanders acquired the land in Virginia. Esiason: “That complicates that whole thing and maybe makes that team worth even more money now because they do have (a) spot (for a new stadium)” (“Boomer and Gio,” WFAN, 5/25).

ALL-TIME WORST? In Philadelphia, Marcus Hayes writes Snyder is the "worst owner in sports," and he "doesn't try to hide it." Now though, the "Football Billionaires Club" is "considering expulsion, but not for the reasons any decent person might think." Snyder's been accused of "skimming the profits," which, "apparently, is far worse than creating a toxic workplace, partaking in two bogus investigations, and obscuring the results from public view -- all with the league's implicit blessing." Snyder's style has been "poisonous," but it "looks like a minor scam might end his days as an owner." NFL owners "should have forced Snyder to sell in 2021, when, according to a report by a Washington radio station, the league's investigator recommended he be forced to sell." Hayes: "To review: Accusations of groping female employees and making surreptitious, lewd videos of team cheerleaders: Shoulder shrug. Accusations of skimming millions from billionaires: Death penalty" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 5/25).
