NFL's regular-season local ratings show winning matters in-market

The NFL's local TV ratings for the '21 regular season show how immediately on-field performance and franchise perception can affect the viewing habits of teams' in-market fanbase. Two championship contenders in the AFC -- the Bills and Chiefs -- led the way in local ratings, both in smaller markets where ratings for the hometown team are typically higher. But the Bills, a popular Super Bowl pick at the start of the season and a steady on-field performer throughout, saw a 12% uptick over an already healthy 42.2 average rating from the '20 season. The Chiefs' rating dipped a bit (-4%) from its league-high 47.1 in '20, but remained impressive at 45.3. The biggest year-over-year gain belonged to the Chargers in L.A., making significant gains in the massive L.A. TV market as they remained in the playoff hunt until the final game of the regular season. The Cowboys were up 23%, while two teams -- the Panthers and quickly improving Cardinals -- saw gains of 19%. The biggest drop from '20 was 18% for the Texans, a franchise in seeming disarray both on and off the field. Three underperforming NFC squads in larger markets -- the Giants, Bears and Seahawks -- saw their average ratings fall 14% each (SBJ).
