Audience Analysis: NFL a boon for even non-NFL programming

By Austin Karp

Getting attached to NFL playoff windows has been good exposure for St. John’s men’s hoops, as the program has now appeared in Fox Sports’ top three college basketball telecasts on record. Coming off the Buccaneers-Eagles game on Sunday, Fox averaged 2.02 million viewers for St. John’s-Georgetown, which is the third-best CBB audience yet for Fox. The top spot remains St. John’s-Xavier in a similar time slot in January ’20 (2.31 million), while No. 2 is St. John’s-Duke from Jan. 25, 2015, which marked Mike Krzyzewski’s 1,000th victory.

MANIC MONDAY: Coming out of NFL Wild Card weekend, FS1 saw its best audience on record for the “Skip & Shannon” studio show, averaging 442,000 viewers on Monday. “The Herd” also set a record on Monday on FS1, averaging 290,000 viewers.

BULLISH IN BRISTOL: ESPN through the CFP Championship is off to its best viewership in primetime since ’11, and best total-day audience since ’17. The sports network to start ’22 has been outperforming all cable competitors, ranking No. 1 among viewers 18-49 in primetime, as well as among all adults in total-day. The Monday following the end of the NFL regular season (and ahead of the CFP title game) was the best audience on record for “Get Up” (620,000 viewers). “PTI” that Monday (1.1 million viewers) had its best audience since Jan. 9, 2018, while “Around The Horn” (670,000) had its best show since Nov. 15, 2019.

NOTES: ABC on Sunday averaged 624,000 viewers for the broadcast network’s first regular-season college gymnastics meet. That figure up against NFL football marks the second-best audience for a college gymnastics meet on ESPN networks since ’11.

SBJ Spotlight: TikTok’s threat to traditional sports media

While tech companies are consumed with finding ways to compete with TikTok, almost no one in conventional media “spends any time talking about it,” said Recode senior correspondent Peter Kafka in an Spotlight interview with SBJ’s John Ourand. “To me, that’s just an obvious disconnect.” Kafka authored a recent column headlined, “It’s TikTok’s world. Can TV live in it?” He said the main response to TikTok’s growth from traditional media execs has been to “punt and hope it’s someone else’s problem a quarter from now or two years from now.” But Kafka said that ignores the trend of conventional broadcast audiences growing older while a billion younger consumers spend most of their media time watching short video after short video. “If you’re in the business of getting anyone under the age of 30 to look at what you’re putting on a screen, you have to think about the fact that you’re probably asking them to put down TikTok and watch your thing instead,” said Kafka. “That’s a very difficult ask. … [TikTok] is insanely addictive.”
