Vikings will hire GM before looking for new coach

The Vikings will hire a new GM "before they look for a new head coach," according to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul PIONEER PRESS. Vikings co-Owner & President Mark Wilf is "not concerned about other teams with openings for a coach perhaps beating the Vikings to candidates." Wilf said, "We’re not going to get caught up in any kind of frenzies in terms of chasing this one or that one. We’re going to be deliberate, we’re going to be thorough.” Wilf added that "ownership and those already with the organization will conduct interviews." He "didn’t give names" but among those "expected to be in on the interview process" include COO Andrew Miller and Exec VP Rob Brzezinski. For the GM and head coaching job, the Vikings "must satisfy the Rooney Rule and interview at least one minority candidate for each position." Wilf said, “We want to have the highest expectations for our GM and coach, and that includes making sure the net is cast wide. That includes diversity, that includes all includes all kinds of backgrounds, includes all kinds of experiences” (St. Paul PIONEER PRESS, 1/11). In Minneapolis, Ben Goessling notes the fact the Vikings are starting with their GM search could mean they "won't hire a head coach until the end of January." That could give them time to "wait to interview candidates currently with teams on deep playoff runs" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 1/11).

TIME TO MOVE ON: In Minneapolis, Chip Scoggins writes it was "just time" to acknowledge that "staleness had taken root inside the Vikings organization and was impeding progress in the pursuit of a championship." Eight years of the tandem of GM Rick Spielman and coach Mike Zimmer "was enough." The Wilfs in making their decision to fire both showed they "recognize a Band-Aid won't fix a franchise that missed the playoffs three of the past four seasons with a roster filled with high-priced veterans." The NFL shelf life "only values stability if the reward exceeds a brief playoff appearance every other year." This leadership duo had "plenty of time and opportunity to get it right" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 1/11).

DIVERSIFY THE SEARCH: In Minneapolis, Jim Souhan writes the Wilfs have "walked the walk on social justice, contributing time and money and casting themselves as anti-racists," but it is "time for the Wilfs to prove they care about more than slogans and symbols." They have an "opportunity to take advantage of the NFL's inherent racism and hire an underappreciated coaching candidate." The search for a new GM and coach "will test the Wilfs." They are "accustomed to relying on Spielman." They should "treat this as an opportunity to think independently and seek fresh expertise." If they hire a Black GM and coach, they will be "taking advantage of the NFL's systemic racism, and mining an underappreciated market" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 1/11).

SBJ Spotlight: TikTok’s threat to traditional sports media

While tech companies are consumed with finding ways to compete with TikTok, almost no one in conventional media “spends any time talking about it,” said Recode senior correspondent Peter Kafka in an Spotlight interview with SBJ’s John Ourand. “To me, that’s just an obvious disconnect.” Kafka authored a recent column headlined, “It’s TikTok’s world. Can TV live in it?” He said the main response to TikTok’s growth from traditional media execs has been to “punt and hope it’s someone else’s problem a quarter from now or two years from now.” But Kafka said that ignores the trend of conventional broadcast audiences growing older while a billion younger consumers spend most of their media time watching short video after short video. “If you’re in the business of getting anyone under the age of 30 to look at what you’re putting on a screen, you have to think about the fact that you’re probably asking them to put down TikTok and watch your thing instead,” said Kafka. “That’s a very difficult ask. … [TikTok] is insanely addictive.”
