The NBA announced that former NBAer MALIK ROSE is the new Head of Basketball Operations for the G League. Rose, 47, replaces BRAD WALKER, who was named America East Conference Commissioner in August. Rose has worked in NBA Basketball Operations since June '20, and he has previously served as Assistant GM of the Pistons and GM of the Erie BayHawks, the Hawks' G League affiliate (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 1/6).

EXECS: The Canadiens hired veteran Réseau des sports journalist CHANTAL MACHABEE as VP/Communications. Machabee brings "more than three decades of experience as a sports journalist," and she replaces PAUL WILSON, who was fired as "part of the purge that saw the departure" of GM MARC BERGEVIN. Machabee will "report directly" to Groupe CH President of Sports & Entertainment FRANCE MARGARET BELANGER (MONTREAL GAZETTE, 1/5)....Former XFL Dir of Communications & Media Relations ROB COROLLA joined Learfield as Dir of Industry Relations (SBJ)....American Express Senior Manager of Global Sports Experiences & Partnerships DAVID PICIOSKI has left the company to take a role with the sports department at Amazon Prime Video. Picioski was a member of SBJ's New Voices Under 30 class last year (SBJ)....BRENT HAAG was hired as Senior Account Executive at Integrity 9 Sports & Entertainment. Haag will be working on Youth Sports Solutions and is based in K.C. (Integrity 9).

SBJ Spotlight: TikTok’s threat to traditional sports media

While tech companies are consumed with finding ways to compete with TikTok, almost no one in conventional media “spends any time talking about it,” said Recode senior correspondent Peter Kafka in an Spotlight interview with SBJ’s John Ourand. “To me, that’s just an obvious disconnect.” Kafka authored a recent column headlined, “It’s TikTok’s world. Can TV live in it?” He said the main response to TikTok’s growth from traditional media execs has been to “punt and hope it’s someone else’s problem a quarter from now or two years from now.” But Kafka said that ignores the trend of conventional broadcast audiences growing older while a billion younger consumers spend most of their media time watching short video after short video. “If you’re in the business of getting anyone under the age of 30 to look at what you’re putting on a screen, you have to think about the fact that you’re probably asking them to put down TikTok and watch your thing instead,” said Kafka. “That’s a very difficult ask. … [TikTok] is insanely addictive.”
