NFL Franchise Notes: Jaguars owner to face defining moves

In Jacksonville, Gene Frenette writes it is not an overstatement to suggest Jaguars Owner Shad Khan is "at the most important crossroad of his tenure as an NFL owner." His approval ratings are "probably at an all-time low." Khan is "facing heat like at no other time." There have been multiple instances of "patience wearing thin among Jaguars' supporters," but it has "never quite hit this boiling point." Despite a report last month that the team would retain GM Trent Baalke in '22, several sources have indicated that his future "remains a fluid situation." Identifying former coach Urban Meyer's successor "has to be priority No. 1 in how to fix this broken franchise," but whatever the outcome, it "all starts with Khan, who is 0-for-4 on coaching hires and has an angry fan base not feeling confident about getting the next one right if he keeps Baalke" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 1/5).

GIANT DISAPPOINTMENT: ESPN’s Max Kellerman said, “This Giants team is an embarrassment and has been for years.” However, the "buck doesn't stop" with coach Joe Judge or Senior VP & GM Dave Gettleman, but rather with President & CEO John Mara, "who has botched his job as president at every turn now for 10 years." Kellerman: “Somebody hired those people. Not only those people, but the people before them." Mara "should fire himself as president." ESPN’s Dan Graziano: “If you’re a fan of the team, the Maras come with that, and they’re going to run it as long as they want” (“This Just In,” ESPN, 1/4).

TURNING IT AROUND: In Houston, Brian Smith writes Texans GM Nick Caserio has the "biggest to-do list" in the NFL, and he "can't wait" to see what the GM does in his second year. Caserio "shouldn't have to waste any more work time on a 2021 season that was over before it began." It is "time for Caserio to finally greenlight" a Deshaun Watson "blockbuster, clean house a little more, create a future in the draft and build off a few of the things that the Texans got right in 2021" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 1/5).
