Bob Neumeier, NBC horse racing expert and Boston sports mainstay, dies at 70

NBC horse racing expert and longtime Boston sports journalist BOB NEUMEIER passed away Saturday at age 70, suffering from "congestive heart failure and heart disease," according to Chad Finn of the BOSTON GLOBE. Neumeier had "been in hospice care for the past eight weeks." He was "a well-liked fixture on the Boston sports media scene for nearly 40 years," serving as a reporter and anchor at WBZ-TV from '81-00. Neumeier co-hosted middays on sports radio station WEEI-FM from '02-05. He joined Comcast SportsNet New England (now NBC Sports Boston) in '10. Neumeier also called the Bruins on WBZ-FM from '96-99, and was "best known to a national audience as a longtime trusted expert on NBC’s horse racing coverage." He also contributed "to NBC Sports’ hockey and Olympics coverage through the years." In October '14, Neumeier was preparing to head to L.A. to be part of NBC Sports’ coverage of the Breeders’ Cup when he suffered "a stroke that required 5½ hours of surgery." He returned to NBC Sports Boston’s airwaves in April '15 and remained "a clever and welcome presence." The net let him go "amid budget cuts" in '16, but he was "never far from Boston sports fans’ minds" (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/25).
