St. Louis City launches app ahead of inaugural MLS season

By Mark J. Burns

MLS expansion club St. Louis City SC today is launching its custom-built app following an 18-month strategy, ideation and development process. The club will enter MLS in '23 as the league's 29th team. “What does the next-generation stadium look like? That has everything to do with our architecture, the design, but also ways that we can use technology to make sure that we're really the first of the new and not the last of the old,” said team Chief Experience Officer Matt Sebek, who spearheaded the app project internally. “The role that mobile apps and technology play into that, we thought that the sooner we can begin that journey, the better.” Sebek said fans’ experience at the club's as-yet-unnamed venue will be “frictionless and personalized,” much of that made possible through the app with digital ticketing, mobile payments and order-ahead food/beverage service. In-app content offerings will include interviews with execs and staff, live construction cameras, weekly fan polls, live-streamed academy matches and AR/VR stadium tours. “We definitely see the app as a revenue driver in the future, but for us right now, it’s all about the content and delivering that to the fans,” Sebek said. Fans who download the app within a day will be entered in to win one of 100 special-edition T-shirts. St. Louis City developed the app for iOS and Android in tandem with four St. Louis-area freelance developers. Their names could not be provided at presstime.
