New cycling event coming to Sacramento looks to boost road racing

By Chris Smith

A new pro cycling event in Sacramento, Into the Lion’s Den, will offer a $100,000 prize pool and aim to reignite the nation’s languishing road racing scene. The prize purse, the biggest ever offered for a criterium race in the U.S., will be split evenly between men’s and women’s competitions, with competitors to be announced next month. The two pro races will cap a day-long festival on Oct. 30, which will include a community ride and amateur race. The event was founded by cyclist Justin Williams, who also co-founded and manages L39ION, the L.A.-based cycling team that is aiming to increase diversity in the sport. Cycling component manufacturer SRAM is the event’s presenting sponsor.
