Pitt football program lands $20M donation from alum

Pitt alumnus Chris Bickell has "made a donation of $20 million to the football program -- the largest single gift in Pitt athletics history," according to Jerry DiPaola of the PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW. Half of the donation "will be used immediately to enhance the program’s training, nutrition and learning environment infrastructure." Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi "hinted part of the money might be earmarked for an expansion of the weight room at the Duratz Athletic Complex." To recognize Bickell’s gift, the head football coaching position at Pitt will be named the “Chris Bickell ’97 Head Football Coach" (TRIBLIVE.com, 9/2). In Pittsburgh, Johnny McGonigal notes though it "may seem odd, naming the role of head coach after a donor is somewhat common in college sports." Notre Dame, Stanford, Northwestern and others have "named their head coach position after a donor." Michigan has "named the head coach, offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator positions after donors" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 9/3).
